Slowing Down, Heating Up

Summer in DC is an important opportunity to decompress from months of official meetings and focus on community engagement. That's true for DC Council as much as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners, and summer 2024 is holding true to that trend.

There are plenty of neighborhood improvement projects—both proposed and in-progress—that I've been paying attention to. To name a few: Columbia Road is getting a safety facelift, Kalorama Park is slated for erosion prevention investments, and hundreds of new housing units are under construction or will be shortly. I've also been actively coordinating efforts to recreate the Unity Mural currently on the Pepco substation on Champlain Street. Please get in touch with me if you want to help out!

I joined residents and housing advocates from around DC at the second annual Tenant Resource Fair, held at the MLK library

While participating in RAGBRAI—a yearly event where thousands of cyclists bike across the state of Iowa—I made sure to put DC on the map of who rode in 2024

Now let's review July 2024, glance at August 2024, meet our organization + business in focus, and see this month's video briefing.

WHAT WE DID
  • Supported medical cannabis retailer license application for Positronics (9-0)

  • Supported (9-0) proposed public art project for alley between California St NW and Florida Ave NW

  • Supported (9-0) permit applications for Adams Morgan Day 2024

    • The popular event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 8

  • Continued discussing WMATA's proposed Better Bus Network

    • I submitted comments as 1C03 commissioner to urge Adams Morgan get better bus routes in the proposed plan

  • Attended public library ANC focus group on Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle/U Street library needs

    • It's unclear if a new library will come to Adams Morgan in the near future, but I'll continue advocating for that much-needed addition

  • Signed letter urging Mayor Bowser keep families in the rapid re-housing process until obtaining housing vouchers

  • DC's Zoning Commission advanced a map amendment which would allow more housing—much of it required to be affordable for low-income earners—at 1617 U St NW

    • The joint fire and police station was redistricted from ANC 1C to ANC 1B in 2022, but remains a relevant property for Adams Morgan

WHAT'S UP NEXT
  • ANC 1C is on recess for the month of August, with meetings resuming in September

  • August 7, 14, and 21: Kalorama Park will host free outdoor music performances

  • Ongoing: I am organizing with residents and commissioners regarding issues at residential properties controlled by UIP Property Management

    • If you've had problems while living in a UIP property and we haven't already spoken, please send me a message
